A New Wiki is Born

I'm proud to announce the birth of a new wiki named "ESL for Migrants". I've only just had the chance to develop it a little during this EVO session, so please be kind as this is just the beginning and it is my very first attempt to organize a collaborative endeavor through a wiki. This wiki is a dream come true and I hope it will be able to grow and grow!

For several years now, I've had a true desire to create an online resource for ESL teachers who work with the under-served migrant and seasonal farm worker population in the U.S., and especially in my home state of Ohio. When I was a graduate student, several members of the university's TESL program volunteered or worked with a local community-based social service agency to offer ESL classes and we noticed a need for appropriate materials and information. We worked together to create some resources, and I'm hoping to be able to share some of these via the wiki.

Right now, I've created pages on the wiki for teaching materials/resources; "Voices from the Field" (real life experiences of students, teachers, and others); and recommended print and online resources, but other related topics of interest are also welcome. If you have any information to contribute to this wiki or know of anyone who would be interested, please do get in touch. And visit ESL for Migrants soon!

Hello Mary,

Wish you best of luck with your new wiki. Just been over and it looks as a very focused topic, which I like. I think it is important to create something new, there are enough pages on Internet, don't you think?

I'm a fellow EFL teacher from Buenos Aires, just now experimenting with a wikispace. I'm looking forward to my next course starting March and hope my students welcome the idea.
It's pretty empty now in Feb, but if you are curious... here:

Best,

Hi Claudia,

Thanks for visiting my blog and wiki. I hope that the wiki will be able to develop into a new and useful resource. However, it will probably remain "under perpetual construction", to use a phrase from your wiki, for quite some time. Especially because I've since realized that all my computer files related to ESL for Migrants are in storage back in the States.

I'll check back in on your wiki to see what your students have done with it, Claudia. If it is anything like your fceblog, it will be fabulous!

Thank you so much for your words Mary. My course starts late March, we'll see... I'm pretty enthusiastic with the idea myself and keep looking at other wikis for inspiration.

It is good to find someone at the same stage of wiki construction because we can learn from the process and not just be overwhelmed at what other teachers have accomplished through time.

I'll save your wiki in my favourites. Your wiki topic is new to me. So I'll learn about Migrants.

And yes! I'll keep the phrase "under perpetual construction" as a motto for this wiki project.
